The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Theological Studies is a four-year research degree offered conjointly by Trinity College and the University of Toronto through the Toronto School of Theology. Students undertake original research in one or more subject areas of theology within an interdisciplinary and ecumenical framework, drawing on the resources of the Toronto School of Theology's federated colleges. The program develops analytical skills, methodological rigour, and a broad theological knowledge base, preparing graduates for research careers and university or college-level teaching of theological subjects. Coursework and comprehensive examinations lead to a dissertation based on independent research supervised by faculty across the participating colleges. The Faculty of Divinity provides financial assistance of at least $6,000 annually for students' first four years of study. Admission and program requirements are administered jointly through the Toronto School of Theology's graduate degree program, in coordination with the University of Toronto's School of Graduate Studies.
