Overview
This program leads to a Ph.D. in physical sciences, delivered on campus at the Moncton campus through the Faculte des sciences, and trains researchers to master expertise in their research field while developing the ability to design and lead an independent research project. Graduates are expected to analyze theoretical or experimental results obtained in the laboratory, write high-quality scientific articles, and use scientific communication tools effectively. Admission requires a master's degree in physics, physical engineering, chemistry, or a related field completed with a strong academic record, functional knowledge of English, and sponsorship by a professor qualified to supervise doctoral research. An alternate direct-entry route exists for students already enrolled in a related master's program at the university who maintain a required average and present a synthesis of their work for committee approval. Minimum full-time duration is three years, with a maximum of seven years from first enrollment.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Admission requires satisfying the university's general conditions for third-cycle studies (University Regulation 22.2). Applicants must hold a master's degree in physics, physical engineering, chemistry, or a related field, completed with a strong academic record, and have functional knowledge of English. Candidates must be sponsored by a professor qualified to supervise doctoral research. Students already in a related university master's program may be admitted directly without completing the master's thesis if they maintain an average of at least 3.7 on a 4.3 scale in their coursework and seminars and present a satisfactory synthesis of their work to the Graduate Studies Committee.
