Program details

Overview

This Diplôme d'études supérieures spécialisées (DESS) in language teaching is a 30-credit graduate program for education professionals seeking to strengthen their expertise in second-language acquisition and teaching, or in teaching through children's literature, addressing multicultural and plurilingual classroom settings. It offers two concentrations: French teaching through children's literature, a cohort-based option admitting in the Fall only, and second-language teaching, which also admits in the Winter. Courses are offered full-time and part-time, with evening sections available, on the Montreal campus. Full-time study takes a minimum of two trimesters, with a maximum of three trimesters full-time or nine trimesters part-time. Applicants must hold a bachelor's degree, and depending on prior education, may need to demonstrate French proficiency through an approved test. The program is intended for practicing and prospective teachers who want to develop specialized expertise in either concentration.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Applicants must hold a bachelor's degree. Applicants educated entirely in French may satisfy the French-language requirement through transcript review, while others must submit results from an approved French test (TEF, TCF, DALF, or equivalent) meeting the program's thresholds and may be required to complete one or two French writing courses during their first year. A program-specific questionnaire must also be submitted with the application.
