Overview
This 98-credit undergraduate program leads to a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.), offered full-time or part-time (maximum six years) at the Montreal campus, with contingent admission in the fall and winter terms for applicants entering from a Quebec college diploma or prior university study, and fall only for applicants entering on the basis of experience or international background. The curriculum covers civil, criminal, constitutional, administrative, and international law, with 59 mandatory core credits in areas such as legal research, obligations, property, constitutional law, administrative law, criminal law, and civil liability. Students then take 27 credits of optional courses across five modules -- public law, private and business law, socio-legal issues, labour and social law, and international law -- plus 12 credits of electives outside the discipline. Foundational courses are offered in both day and evening sections, and practical training includes legal clinics, mock trials, internships, and simulation exercises. The program emphasizes social justice themes, including the defence of rights of individuals, Indigenous peoples, and other groups, and suits students preparing for careers as lawyers, notaries, or other legal professionals.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Entry is competitive, capped at 162 seats in fall and 50 in winter (winter limited to the DEC and university-studies bases; the experience and outside-Quebec bases admit in fall only). Direct entry is via a DEC or equivalent, selected 100% on the academic cote de rendement (cote R). Applicants may alternatively qualify with at least two years of relevant experience in rights advocacy, justice administration or public-sector legal or legislative work (minimum age 21; pre-selected on the Test de scolaptitudes, final selection 75% interview/25% test, interview pass mark 75%), with at least 30 university credits in one program (pre-selected on academic file, final selection 25% file/75% interview), or with a diploma from outside Quebec after at least 13 years of schooling (selected on academic file). A separate reserved-seat base exists for Indigenous applicants. All candidates must prove French proficiency through the DEC's uniform French exam, the Quebec ministry's written test, or UQAM's own written French test; francophone-university graduates are exempt.
