This 30-credit Diplome d'etudes superieures specialisees (DESS) develops teaching competencies for practising artist-teachers across four disciplinary concentrations: dramatic art, visual and media arts, dance, and music, for preschool through secondary levels. Coursework builds on candidates' existing artistic training and classroom experience to develop pedagogical skills specific to arts education, and the diploma on its own is not a teaching-certification credential. The program is offered part-time only, with courses scheduled to accommodate working teachers, and admission is offered once a year in the fall term. Before completing the program, candidates who do not pass an institutional French diagnostic test at the required threshold must complete mandatory French-language support coursework. The program suits candidates who already hold a disciplinary bachelor's degree in their chosen artistic field, have gained classroom teaching experience in that discipline, and want graduate-level pedagogical training that builds on their existing artistic practice for the Quebec school system.

Candidates must have at least 165 hours (26 days) of arts-teaching experience in a school setting and hold a teaching contract of at least 20% of a full load by December 1 of the year of admission.
