Overview

This graduate diploma specializes engineering professionals in a topic related to the mining industry, with a particular focus on mining environment and tailings management. The 30-credit program requires a mandatory seminar on special topics in mining engineering plus 27 elective credits chosen from courses covering ore mineralogy, mine backfill, mineral flotation, mining environment and restoration methods, mine geotechnics, rock mechanics, hydrogeology, environmental hydrogeochemistry, mine-effluent treatment, applied geophysics, mine-site restoration, 3D data processing and modelling, geological mapping, extractive metallurgy, mineral deposits, and geoscience data analysis; up to six credits may also be drawn from other UQAT second-cycle courses with program-director approval.

Minimum GPA: 2.70 / 4.3
Admission Requirements: On the academic route, candidates need a bachelor's degree in engineering or equivalent with a cumulative average of at least 2.7 on 4.3 (or 2.5 on 4.0); files between 2.5 and 2.7 on 4.3 may still be reviewed and recommended for admission in certain cases, and an interview may be required. On the experience route, candidates with relevant knowledge, appropriate training and at least five years of relevant professional experience may be admitted following an evaluation by the program director; such candidates must also have completed the graduate microprogram in mining environment (0468) with a cumulative average of at least 2.7 on 4.3, and may be required to take remedial coursework or a qualifying period.
