Overview
The Educational Assistant program at University College of the North is a 530-hour paraprofessional certificate that prepares students to provide educational assistance to students, teachers, counsellors, and other education professionals across a range of settings, with an emphasis on services in Aboriginal and northern communities. The curriculum combines classroom theory, simulated practice, and field placements in real educational settings across ten core courses and one three-credit elective. Topics include the roles and responsibilities of an educational assistant, supporting diverse learners, numeracy and literacy instruction, child development, the effects of trauma, and classroom behaviour management. The program is delivered in person at The Pas Campus. Graduates are prepared to work as educational assistants supporting students and teachers in schools, with the program reporting full graduate employment after completion.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Applicants must have Manitoba Grade 12 graduation or an equivalent credential, or qualify as a mature student able to demonstrate the reading, writing, and math skills needed for the program; current or prior employment as an educational assistant is also accepted in place of the standard entry route.
