Overview
This is a thesis-based Master of Science offered on campus by the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology in the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry at the University of Alberta. Students complete graduate coursework that satisfies the faculty's Program Core Competencies, covering professional development and research ethics, communication through departmental seminars and oral presentations, and critical reading and background knowledge, with courses such as Bench to Bedside Impact, Experimental Design and Scientific Communication, and Directed Reading in Laboratory Medicine and Pathology among the options. The core of the degree is original thesis research undertaken with a supervisor and supervisory committee in an area of laboratory medicine and pathology, culminating in a written thesis and an oral defence. Students admitted to the program must also complete a course on the histories, experiences and perspectives of Indigenous peoples in Canada as a program requirement. Students transferring from the MSc into the department's PhD program follow a separate faculty process.
