Program details
Overview
The PhD in Sociology is a research-intensive doctoral program that trains students to conduct original sociological research and prepares them for academic and research careers. Students develop theoretical and methodological expertise and complete coursework in sociological theory and in qualitative and quantitative research methods, in addition to courses spanning the discipline more broadly. Research and coursework are organized around four specialty fields: Crime and Social Control; Environment, Food and Communities; Identities and Social Inclusion; and Work and Organization. The program is full-time and delivered on campus, with a nominal length of four years. Students complete a dissertation under faculty supervision and are expected to contribute original scholarship to the field. Full-time PhD students receive a minimum funding package, guaranteed for four years, combining teaching assistantships, research assistantships, and scholarships. Admission is based on a completed master's degree in sociology or a closely related field, along with prior coursework covering sociological theory and research methods.
