Program details
Overview
The Sociology major is an undergraduate program at the University of Guelph focused on understanding the structure and dynamics of local and global societies. Coursework examines inequality, diversity, culture, work, violence, health and media through a combination of theoretical study and applied research methods. Students can pursue experiential learning through co-op placements, field schools or study abroad programs, connecting classroom theory to real-world social contexts. The curriculum develops skills in critical analysis, research design and data interpretation that apply across public, private and non-profit sectors. Sociology can be combined with a minor or second major to broaden career preparation. Graduates pursue roles such as criminal justice professional, data scientist, educator, health program officer, human resources professional, human rights officer, labour relations specialist, project manager, publicist, researcher, social policy analyst and social worker, reflecting the program's emphasis on transferable analytical and communication skills applicable to a wide range of social institutions and organizations.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Admission to the Sociology major follows the University of Guelph's general Ontario Secondary School admission process: an applicant's admission average is calculated from their top six completed 4U/M (or equivalent) courses, including any courses required for the program (or, where 4U/M courses are unavailable, a combination of top six completed or in-progress 4U/M and completed 3U/M courses). Cut-offs are determined by the quality and quantity of applications received and the space available in the program; published estimated cut-off ranges are a guide only and do not guarantee an offer of admission.
