Program details
Overview
The Biological and Pharmaceutical Chemistry major combines chemical methodology with the biological sciences, covering environmental chemistry and organic reactivity alongside biomedical physiology. Students gain hands-on laboratory experience with analytical instruments, including an undergraduate nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectrometer, and take courses such as Introduction to Toxicology and Analytical Chemistry I and II. Third-year students with an interest in pharmacy may complete a semester of additional training at Seneca College through a partnership with the University of Guelph. A co-op option extends the program to four and a half years and includes four work terms. Graduates pursue careers including cancer researcher, green chemical manufacturer, cosmetic analyst, and pharmacist. Related major options include Biochemistry, Chemistry, Biomedical Science, and Biomedical Toxicology. The program combines chemistry laboratory training with coursework relevant to pharmaceutical development and testing.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Biological and Pharmaceutical Chemistry is a Physical Science major within the Bachelor of Science, confirmed on the B.Sc. program's own Physical Science major listing, and is admitted under the B.Sc. Physical Sciences requirement rather than the Biological Sciences one. Applicants need English (ENG4U), Calculus and Vectors (MCV4U), two of Biology (SBI4U), Chemistry (SCH4U) or Physics (SPH4U), and two additional 4U or 4M courses, six 4U/M courses in total. Completion of all three 4U sciences is recommended; applicants admitted with only two must complete a replacement course in their first semester to cover the missing science. The admission average is calculated from these six 4U/M courses under the current Ontario Secondary School Curriculum, with equivalent courses counted once and the non-academic component of 4U/M co-op courses excluded.
