Program details
Overview
Studio Art is a four-year Bachelor of Arts major at the University of Guelph in which students explore painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, printmaking and digital media under the guidance of practicing artist-instructors. The curriculum combines hands-on studio sessions with critique discussions, art history study and exploration of contemporary trends, helping students develop an individual artistic voice through experimentation across techniques and concepts. No portfolio is required for admission, and the program welcomes students without prior formal art training. Students build a portfolio over the course of study, exhibit work in on-campus galleries and have opportunities to network with visiting artists and industry professionals. As an interdisciplinary Bachelor of Arts, Studio Art can be combined with a minor or second major in another discipline. Graduates pursue roles such as art teacher, commercial artist, art therapist, photographer, professional artist, museum curator, gallery curator and sculptor, and some continue on to Master of Fine Art programs in Canada, Europe or the United States.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Admission to the Studio Art Bachelor of Arts (BA) follows the University of Guelph's general Ontario Secondary School admission process: an applicant's admission average is calculated from their top six completed 4U/M (or equivalent) courses, including any courses required for the program (or, where 4U/M courses are unavailable, a combination of top six completed or in-progress 4U/M and completed 3U/M courses). Cut-offs are determined by the quality and quantity of applications received and the space available in the program; published estimated cut-off ranges are a guide only and do not guarantee an offer of admission. No portfolio is required for admission, and the program welcomes students without prior formal art training.
