Program details
Overview
Theatre Studies is a four-year Bachelor of Arts major at the University of Guelph covering acting, stagecraft, technical production design (including stage management, and set, lighting, sound and costume design), screenwriting and theatre history. Students develop skills in collaboration, critical thinking and communicating ideas with impact through coursework that combines performance training with technical and directing experience. No audition is required for admission, and the program welcomes students without prior formal theatre training. As a capstone, students form a student-led theatre company with their peers and produce a final show from concept through performance. Graduates pursue careers such as actor, director, drama teacher, lighting or sound engineer, film and television producer, arts administrator, digital marketer, costume designer, game designer and audiobook narrator. The program combines practical production experience with academic study of dramatic literature and theatre history, preparing students for both performance-based and behind-the-scenes roles across the theatre, film and creative industries.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Admission to the Theatre Studies Bachelor of Arts (BA) follows the University of Guelph's general Ontario Secondary School admission process: an applicant's admission average is calculated from their top six completed 4U/M (or equivalent) courses, including any courses required for the program (or, where 4U/M courses are unavailable, a combination of top six completed or in-progress 4U/M and completed 3U/M courses). Cut-offs are determined by the quality and quantity of applications received and the space available in the program; published estimated cut-off ranges are a guide only and do not guarantee an offer of admission. No audition is required for admission, and the program welcomes students without prior formal theatre training.
