Program details

Overview

Theoretical Physics is an undergraduate major at the University of Guelph that builds a strong foundation in mathematics early in the program to support the study of modern theoretical physics. Coursework covers topics such as black holes, the internal structure of protons and neutrons, and high-temperature superconductivity, taught in small classes by faculty active in research and publication in leading physics journals. Students gain laboratory experience alongside their theoretical coursework, and the program reports high rates of student research awards and journal publications. The strong mathematical training developed through the major applies both to traditional physics career paths and to roles requiring quantitative skills in industry, government and academia. The major is offered alongside related programs such as Physical Science and Physics, allowing students with adjacent interests to select the specialization that best matches their goals. Graduates are prepared for further study in physics or related quantitative fields, as well as analytical roles across technical and research-based sectors.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Admission to the Theoretical Physics major follows the University of Guelph's general Ontario Secondary School admission process: an applicant's admission average is calculated from their top six completed 4U/M (or equivalent) courses, including any courses required for the program (or, where 4U/M courses are unavailable, a combination of top six completed or in-progress 4U/M and completed 3U/M courses). Cut-offs are determined by the quality and quantity of applications received and the space available in the program; published estimated cut-off ranges are a guide only and do not guarantee an offer of admission.
