Overview
The Bachelor of Arts in Criminology examines crime and criminalization through a sociological lens, covering the operation of law and the criminal justice system alongside issues of social justice and human rights. Coursework addresses gender, race, and class dynamics in crime, youth criminality, violence and victimization, criminal law, policing, crime prevention, restorative justice, and criminology from a global perspective. The program is offered as a BA General (three years, 90 credit hours, minimum 2.0 GPA) or a BA Honours (four years, 120 credit hours, minimum 3.0 GPA), with a co-op option available through the Faculty of Arts cooperative education program, which lets students alternate academic terms with paid employment. The program is delivered at the Fort Garry campus, with part-time study available for both degree levels, through the Department of Sociology and Criminology. It suits students aiming for careers in law enforcement, corrections, probation and parole, criminal justice more broadly, crime prevention, private security, counselling, or government policy research, combining sociological theory with applied study of the justice system and options for work-integrated learning.
Requirements
Minimum GPA:70.00 / %
Admission Requirements: Admission is first to the Faculty of Arts general B.A. program, not directly to a subject major. Direct Entry from high school requires Manitoba high school graduation with five full Grade 12 credits (S, G, or U) and a minimum 70% average over English 40S, Mathematics 40S, and two more academic 40S courses, with no less than 60% in each. Advanced Entry (transfer, 24+ credit hours) requires a minimum cumulative or adjusted GPA of 2.00 (or, under the Dean's Recommendation pathway, a 2.00 GPA on the best 24 transferable credit hours). Once admitted, a student may declare a Criminology Major (30 credit hours) or Minor (18 credit hours) once its prerequisite is satisfied; the Faculty's rule for entry into any Major or Minor is a grade of C or better in the prerequisite course(s) for Criminology.
