Overview
The Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering runs four to five years and combines basic sciences, mathematics, and engineering sciences with the development of design skills for machines and processes. Coursework spans mechanics, materials, energy systems, mechanical device design, manufacturing engineering, computer-aided design, power generation, and aeronautical sciences, with students able to pursue an aerospace specialization or streams in aerospace, materials, solid mechanics, or thermofluids. A Co-operative Education and Industrial Internship Program is available, adding paid work terms that count toward professional engineering designation and are noted on graduation documents. The program is described as the first in Canada to introduce a team-based capstone design course, and students have access to laboratories including materials research facilities and can join technical societies such as SAE International for vehicle design projects. Direct entry from Manitoba high school requires an 80% average with minimums in English, Pre-Calculus Mathematics, Chemistry, and Physics; advanced entry is available after 24 or more post-secondary credit hours. Delivered at the Fort Garry campus, the program suits students seeking design-focused engineering careers in industries such as aerospace, manufacturing, and energy.
Requirements
Minimum GPA:80.00 / %
Admission Requirements: Admission is first to the Price Faculty of Engineering's Preliminary Engineering Program, not directly to Mechanical Engineering. Direct Entry from high school requires Manitoba high school graduation with five full Grade 12 credits (S, G, or U) and a minimum 80% average over English 40S, Pre-Calculus Mathematics 40S, Chemistry 40S, and Physics 40S, with no less than 70% in each; admission is competitive and higher averages may be required if eligible applicants exceed available spaces. Progression from the preliminary year requires at least 8 of the 12 Preliminary Engineering courses completed with a minimum grade of C in each and a minimum Adjusted GPA (AGPA) of 2.0. Students choose the Mechanical Engineering discipline after completing the required preliminary coursework; the university mathematics requirement for Engineering is met by MATH 1510 or MATH 1710.
Application Details
Application Deadline:Domestic applicants (Canadian citizens and permanent residents) apply directly to the University of Manitoba. As of this September 2026 fetch, the Direct Entry deadlines page shows only the Fall 2026 cycle in full - University 1 and the Diploma in Agriculture at May 1, 2026 domestic / March 1, 2026 international, other Direct Entry programs at March 1, 2026 - a cycle that has already closed, alongside minor Winter 2027 (Dec 1, 2026) and Summer 2027 (Apr 1, 2027) intake deadlines. No Fall 2027 Direct Entry deadline has been published yet, so specific 2027 dates cannot be stated for the university's main intake. The Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Jazz Studies deadline (January 15, applying equally to domestic and international applicants) is likewise confirmed only for the 2026-27 cycle, also closed, with no 2027-28 bulletin posted. These are described as fixed deadlines rather than rolling admission, and the university opens each new cycle's applications on October 1. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
