The Master of Arts in Religion is offered by the Department of Religion at the University of Manitoba as a Joint Program with the Department of Religion and Culture at the University of Winnipeg. The program supports advanced study of religious traditions, texts, and theory, and offers both a thesis route and a coursework route. The thesis route requires a minimum of 12 credit hours of 7000-level Religion coursework plus completion and defence of a thesis. The coursework route requires a minimum of 24 credit hours in total, including at least 18 credit hours in 7000-level Religion courses, and culminates in the presentation and defence of an original research paper. All students must demonstrate competence in a second language relevant to their program, either through a translation examination or through at least six credit hours of coursework beyond the introductory level. A four-year Honours B.A. in Religion is the normal preparation for admission; a Pre-Master's option is available for applicants whose background needs strengthening. Full-time students can expect to complete the degree in two years.
