BA/BS in Major in African Studies

The Major in African Studies is a 42-unit undergraduate major at the University of Ottawa aimed at the acquisition of knowledge and skills to study African issues, using multidisciplinary, international and inter-faculty approaches that integrate courses from five different faculties alongside experiential learning, and adopting a decolonizing and intercultural perspective. Requirements include one compulsory course at the 1000 level, four compulsory courses at the 2000 level, and four compulsory courses at the 3000-4000 level, plus six optional units in experiential learning courses such as creativity and innovation, entrepreneurship and social innovation, global experiential learning, and community engagement, and twelve further optional units chosen from a list covering African history, politics, cinema, anthropology, human rights and related topics. The major is conditional upon approval by the Ontario Universities Council on Quality Assurance and the Ontario Ministry of Colleges and Universities.
