Overview
The Major and Minor Concentrations in African Studies provide an interdisciplinary examination of the African continent and its peoples, covering the history, religions, and cultures of different regions alongside contemporary postcolonial literature and issues in health and economic development. Established in 1969, the program was the first of its kind in Canada. Sample courses include Introduction to African History, Economic Development 1, Social Change in Modern Africa, and Swahili Language and Culture. The concentration is offered within the Faculty of Arts and is commonly combined with related areas such as Islamic Studies, Religious Studies, History, and Anthropology. Graduates pursue paths in fields such as foreign service, journalism, documentary filmmaking, and academia.
