The Honours BSc Physics-Mathematics is a 120-unit undergraduate degree offered by the Department of Physics at the University of Ottawa. The program pairs core physics training in areas such as mechanics, electromagnetism, thermodynamics and quantum mechanics with an enriched mathematics curriculum, giving students a stronger mathematical foundation than the standard Honours BSc in Physics. Physics training develops analytical and problem-solving skills for careers in research and development, the high-technology sector, finance, administration, medicine, management or education, as well as further graduate study. The Department of Physics also offers graduate programs leading to an MSc or PhD, and its research spans biological and complex systems, condensed matter physics, photonics and geomaterials physics. The program is offered in English and in French, includes a French immersion stream, and co-operative education placements are available.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Applicants need English 4U (ENG4U) or Français 4U (FRA4U), Advanced Functions 4U (MHF4U), Calculus and Vectors 4U (MCV4U), and two of Biology 4U (SBI4U), Chemistry 4U (SCH4U), Physics 4U (SPH4U), or Earth and Space Science 4U (SES4U). The published minimum admission average is 78%, with a minimum combined average of 70% required across the science and mathematics prerequisite courses specifically. Students who do not have Calculus and Vectors 4U may take a replacement course at the University in the summer before or during first term. This line is shared across Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Physics, and Physics-Mathematics, and, per the Faculty of Science's own grouping of shared first-year course requirements, also covers the general (undeclared) Bachelor of Science credential and the Life Sciences major, since neither is tracked as a separate admission discipline.
