The Master of Applied Science in Mechanical Engineering is delivered jointly by the University of Ottawa and Carleton University through the Ottawa-Carleton Institute for Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (OCIMAE), established in 1983. Students gain access to professors, courses and facilities at both institutions, with their thesis supervisor's home institution determining their primary campus and degree-granting university. The thesis-based program spans five main research areas: thermal and fluid engineering, solid mechanics and design, materials and manufacturing, controls and robotics, biomedical engineering, and aeronautical and space engineering. Applicants must identify a thesis supervisor and be accepted before enrolling, then complete original research culminating in a master's thesis. Admission requires a bachelor's degree with a specialization or major in mechanical engineering (or equivalent), with a minimum average of 70% (B), and evidence of good academic performance from transcripts or research documents. An accelerated stream is available for students who complete designated graduate-level courses at 70% (B) or higher during their undergraduate degree and hold an admission average of A- (80%) or higher. Full-time students complete the standard program within two years.
