Master of Arts Classical Studies

The Master of Arts in Classical Studies, offered by the Department of Classics and Religious Studies, prepares students for further study in the field of Late Antiquity (roughly A.D. 200 to 700), the transitional period between Antiquity and the Middle Ages. Students study classical languages including Latin, Greek, Coptic, Syriac and Ethiopic and undertake detailed research, coherent argumentation and academic writing. The program offers two completion routes, a research paper option and a thesis option, developing scholarly research skills applicable to academic careers as well as government and other non-academic research roles. Admission requires an honours bachelor's degree, or an equivalent degree, in Classics, Medieval Studies, or a closely related area, with an overall average of at least 70% (B) and 75% (B+) in advanced classical studies courses, plus 18 units of classical language coursework, 12 units in either Greek or Latin and 6 units in the other language, completed at a minimum average of 75% (B+). Full-time students are expected to complete all degree requirements within two years, with a thesis submission deadline of four years from initial enrollment. Admission to the program is currently suspended until further notice.
