Overview
The Juris Doctor (JD) is combined with a Master of Arts in International Affairs through a partnership between the University of Ottawa's Faculty of Law and Carleton University's Norman Paterson School of International Affairs. The Common Law Section of the Faculty of Law is accredited by the Canadian Federation of Law Societies and offers courses spanning public law, private law, litigation and dispute resolution, Indigenous law, international law and human rights, technology law, and environmental law, with opportunities for experiential learning. The program combines this legal curriculum with graduate coursework in international affairs at Carleton University. Students complete a combined total of 93 units across the JD and MA components. The dual-degree structure allows students to complete both legal and international affairs credentials, and the program is offered in English and French.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Admission to the English JD requires a completed or substantially completed undergraduate degree; applicants outside the Mature category must have completed at least three years of undergraduate study (the equivalent of 90 credits or 30 half-courses) before beginning law school. Undergraduate academic performance is a significant numerical factor: most successful applicants have at least an A- or 80% cumulative average. The LSAT is mandatory for the English JD (not required for the French JD); there is no official cutoff, but the Faculty looks for a score above the 70th percentile (158 or higher), weighted less heavily when English is not the applicant's first language. There is no fixed minimum GPA. The combined JD/MBA and JD/MA (with Carleton's Norman Paterson School of International Affairs) pathways require meeting this JD admission line; the graduate-degree half of each combination is governed separately by Telfer's MBA admission requirements or by Carleton University's own graduate admission process, neither of which is captured here.
