Overview

This Master of Science in Computer Science is a graduate program in the Faculty of Science, typically completed in about two years, and accredited by the Computer Science Accreditation Council since the department's original accreditation in 1982. Students choose among a thesis-based route (15 credits of coursework plus 15 credits of thesis research and a defence), a project-based route (21 credits of coursework plus 9 credits of project research and deliverables), or a 30-credit course-based route with a capstone project, available with specializations in Data Science or Human-Centred Computing. A co-op work designation can be added for students who meet the relevant requirements. Research areas supporting the program include artificial intelligence and deep learning, data science and analytics, human-centred computing, software engineering, systems and cybersecurity, and theoretical computer science. Admission requires a four-year computer science bachelor's degree with an overall average of at least 70 percent and a computer science average of at least 75 percent. The program suits computer science graduates seeking research training or advanced technical specialization, with described career outcomes including artificial intelligence researcher, software development engineer, and cybersecurity and data manager.

Requirements

Minimum GPA: 70.00 / %
Admission Requirements: The graduate computer science page's own FAQ sets its admission standard: applicants need a four-year bachelor's degree in computer science with an overall average of at least 70%, and a computer science average of at least 75%. This is consistent with the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research's general graduate rule of a 70% four-year average, since computer science is not on the list of programs requiring a 75% overall average. International applicants must also show English proficiency, per the general FGSR table (computer science is not one of the higher-threshold programs): IELTS Academic 6.5 overall (no band below 6.0), PTE Academic 59, CAEL 70, or Duolingo 125 overall (115 minimum on any section).

Application Details

Application Deadline: Domestic applicants to the University of Regina apply for Fall 2027 entry with a recommended early deadline of 15 March 2027 for best course selection and a final new-applicant deadline of 15 August 2027; Winter 2027-28 entry has an early deadline of 1 November 2026 and a final deadline of 15 December 2026, and Spring/Summer 2027 entry closes 15 April 2027. International (study-permit) applicants share the same final deadlines as domestic students for each term but have no separate early deadline. Numerous named programs, including Nursing, Social Work, Bachelor of Indigenous Social Work, Indigenous Fine Arts and Indigenous Education, carry their own earlier deadlines instead of the general dates. Admission is not described as rolling; late non-competitive applications are simply carried to the next term the program accepts. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
