Overview
This full-time, thesis-based Master of Laws typically takes twelve to sixteen months to complete and carries a twelve-month residency requirement, with courses and supervision delivered in person. Students carry out original legal research under faculty supervision across a range of subject areas, including Aboriginal law and Indigenous peoples' rights, commercial and corporate law, domestic and international criminal law, constitutional and human rights law, environmental law, family law, and international trade and investment law. Admissions are intentionally limited to allow close supervision and sustained faculty engagement, and applicants are not required to have a supervisor lined up before applying. Students have access to graduate-level courses, seminars, office space, and travel grants to support their research. The program suits candidates seeking to deepen legal scholarship and produce original, publishable research rather than pursue general legal practice or bar admission training, making it a fit for those aiming at academic careers, specialized legal research roles, or advanced practice in one of the college's areas of research strength.

Minimum GPA:70.00 / %
Admission Requirements: The University of Saskatchewan's own Master of Laws (LL.M.) admissions page requires a Juris Doctor (J.D.) or Bachelor of Laws degree, or equivalent, from a recognized college or university, with a cumulative weighted average of at least 70% (USask grade system equivalent) in the last two years of study. For English proficiency the page publishes its own recommended scores: TOEFL iBT 90 overall, IELTS Academic 7 overall, or Duolingo English Test 115 overall with no less than 95 in each area. Applicants must also submit three references (two academic, one academic or professional), a statement of intent explaining their reasons for pursuing the LL.M., a two-to-five page research statement describing the proposed thesis topic, and a 20-50 page writing sample, ideally a published article or law school research paper written in English. A supervisor is not required before applying; the program helps match applicants with one. The application deadline is December 15 for the Fall (September) start term.

Start Date:September
Application Deadline:The University of Saskatchewan does not publish fixed general application deadlines for its direct-entry undergraduate colleges (Agriculture and Bioresources, Arts and Science, Education, Edwards School of Business, Engineering, Kinesiology, Dental Hygiene, Dental Therapy): admission requirements and deadlines for the 2027-28 cycle become available only once applications open on 25 September 2026, and the site gives no separate international closing date. Non-direct professional programs set their own dates instead: for September 2027 entry, the College of Law's JD opens 15 October 2026 with rolling review to a 1 February 2027 documents deadline and is not currently accepting international applicants; the College of Medicine's MD applications close 1 October 2026 for domestic (Canadian citizen/PR) applicants only; and the Nutrition program's single deadline is 15 March 2027 for both domestic and international applicants, with no late applications considered. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
