Overview
UFV's Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) degree prepares you to critically examine obstacles individuals face — oppression, discrimination, or trauma — and to help people reach their full potential. Rooted in principles of social justice, equality, empowerment, and respect for diversity and inclusion, the program equips you for practice in a wide range of workplace settings. Upon graduation you can apply to register with the British Columbia College of Social Workers (RSW) or opt to pursue further studies and complete a Master of Social Work.`
Requirements
Admission Requirements: A competitive upper-level entry point, not a first-year one. ACADEMIC: 60 general university-level credits completed by 1 May of the year you apply, made up of six credits from SOWK 110 and SOWK 210; an English composition course worth three credits, either CMNS 125 or ENGL 105; a three-credit English literature course drawn from the ENGL 108-170 range; three credits in human development, either SOWK 225 or PSYC 250; three credits carrying Indigenous or First Nations content, chosen from the School's approved list; and 42 general elective credits, of which up to 12 may be discretionary electives. Cumulative GPA on those 60 credits must be at least 2.67. EXPERIENCE: at least 200 hours of paid or volunteer work in human services supervised by social workers or other professionals; UFV HSER practicum hours count. WRITTEN AND REFERENCES: a set of questions on professional readiness and suitability probing your interest, prior experience, and commitment to social work values, ethics and to social justice, equity, diversity and inclusion; and two references on the School's own forms - one from someone who taught you and can speak to recent academic work, one from a recent supervisor in social work or human services. You must also be aware of, and prepared to work within, the Social Work Code of Ethics and its Standards of Practice; every exchange with the School counts toward the admissions assessment, and a meeting may be requested if anything in the package is unclear. SELECTION: complete applications received by the 31 January deadline are scored out of 100 - up to 40 for GPA, up to 25 for related experience, up to 25 for the personal statement including writing quality, up to 10 for the two references. Entry is competitive and scored out of 100 - up to 40 points for GPA, up to 25 for related work, practicum or volunteer experience, up to 25 for the written personal statement, and up to 10 for two reference forms - so the minimum requirements alone do not secure a seat.
