Program details

Overview

The Bachelor of Social Work is offered at Dalhousie's Halifax campus with both on-campus and online distance study options, available full-time or part-time; international students are limited to the on-campus format. The curriculum covers social work and social justice theory and how to apply it in work with clients, colleagues, and communities, taking a critical and anti-oppressive approach to social policy, professional values, and practice methods. A required 700-hour fieldwork practicum places students with social service agencies and practitioners in real-world settings. The program is accredited by the Canadian Association for Social Work Education, supporting practice across Canada and internationally. It suits students who have already completed university coursework and are seeking careers helping vulnerable populations in areas such as healthcare, child protection, community mental health, and family services.

Requirements

Minimum GPA: 70.00 / %
Admission Requirements: Entry to the BSW is not direct from high school: applicants must first complete at least 30 university credit hours (most finish a full two years before applying), with the last 60 credit hours used for assessment, and community-college credits are not accepted toward this. The School requires a minimum cumulative average of B- (70 percent), two references (academic or non-academic), a written statement discussing a current social issue and the applicant's motivation to study social work, and relevant work or volunteer experience (food preparation and canvassing do not count). No programme-specific course prerequisites are listed. International applicants must also meet Dalhousie's general English-language requirement unless exempt, for example IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0, or TOEFL iBT 90 overall with no section below 20. The programme begins each September.
