Program details

Overview

This certificate focuses on asking critical questions about media that is watched, read, or shared, examining how media outlets select and shape content and the effects those choices have on individuals and society. Students build critical thinking around their own media consumption and learn approaches for crafting and sharing media messages with integrity and effectiveness. It is suited to those who deal with media in their work or who teach media literacy at the elementary, secondary, or adult-education level.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: UFV's own Calendar entry governs admission to the Media Literacy associate certificate. Students already enrolled in a UFV post-secondary program need only meet the individual course prerequisites; new applicants to UFV follow the standard university admission process and must apply online. All applicants must satisfy UFV's Entry-level English language proficiency requirement, for example IELTS Academic 6.0 overall with no band below 5.5, or TOEFL iBT 80 with no section below 19. At least two of the certificate's three required courses, including one of MACS 110 or MACS 130, must be completed at UFV, and a minimum overall GPA of 2.33 is required to graduate with the certificate.

Application Details

Start Date: September, January and May
Application Deadline: Domestic applicants apply directly to UFV: applications for Fall (September) 2027 entry open 1 October 2026, for Winter (January) 2027 entry opened 1 May 2026, and for Summer (May) 2027 entry open 1 October 2026; UFV publishes no closing date for any of these and instead admits many programmes strictly in application-date order once every required document has arrived, so applying soon after opening matters more than any deadline. Grade 12 students may apply from 1 October of their graduating year and must send final transcripts by 3 August. International applicants use UFV International's own windows - 1 October to 31 May for Fall, 1 May to 31 October for Winter and 1 October to 1 March for Summer - and are likewise assessed on a rolling, first-arrived basis until each programme fills. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
