Program details

Overview

Offered through the Modern Languages Institute, the certificate lets students choose among eight languages: German, Mandarin, Spanish, Japanese, Russian, Punjabi, French or Halq'emeylem. Instruction takes place in small classes led by native-speaking instructors and emphasises communication skills, with the option to study or work abroad for language and cultural immersion.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: High-school entrants need B.C. secondary school graduation or equivalent, a minimum B in English 12, and a minimum B average across two other provincially examined Grade 12 subjects. Applicants with post-secondary study instead need one of: 30 arts/science university credits with a cumulative GPA of 2.33, nine arts/science university credits with a GPA of 3.00 or higher, or a B.C. Associate of Arts or UFV diploma in Liberal Arts, Visual Arts, or Theatre with a C average (2.00 cumulative GPA). No language placement test or separate English-proficiency test score is set beyond the English 12 grade requirement for direct-entry applicants; the programme page and its Academic Calendar entry are silent on IELTS/TOEFL for this certificate. International students are welcome to apply.

Application Details

Start Date: September, January and May
Application Deadline: Domestic applicants apply directly to UFV: applications for Fall (September) 2027 entry open 1 October 2026, for Winter (January) 2027 entry opened 1 May 2026, and for Summer (May) 2027 entry open 1 October 2026; UFV publishes no closing date for any of these and instead admits many programmes strictly in application-date order once every required document has arrived, so applying soon after opening matters more than any deadline. Grade 12 students may apply from 1 October of their graduating year and must send final transcripts by 3 August. International applicants use UFV International's own windows - 1 October to 31 May for Fall, 1 May to 31 October for Winter and 1 October to 1 March for Summer - and are likewise assessed on a rolling, first-arrived basis until each programme fills. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
