Program details

Overview

This pre-apprenticeship program gives students the basic skills needed to enter the workforce as a power line worker. Delivered full-time, Monday to Friday, over 12 weeks at UFV's Chilliwack Trades and Technology Centre, with intakes in March and September, the program teaches students to build and maintain overhead and underground power transmission and distribution systems, including pole and tower erection and live-line wiring installation. Instruction combines classroom theory with outdoor, performance-based exercises delivered in partnership with instructors from the Electrical Industry Training Institute, and concludes with an on-site job fair in the final week. Powerline Technician is a nationally designated Red Seal trade, and graduates are positioned to pursue apprenticeships with electrical utilities or contractors. The program suits candidates comfortable working outdoors at height, with physical stamina and no fear of heights; applicants require a high school diploma or equivalent, a valid BC driver's licence, and must complete a mandatory assessment interview covering physical and psychological readiness for elevated work.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: UFV's Powerline Technician program page lists a high school diploma or equivalent, including English 12, Mathematics 11 and Physics 11, as recommended rather than mandatory academic background. A full British Columbia driver's licence, Class 5 or 6 preferred though Class 7 will be considered, with an acceptable driving record, is also recommended. Every applicant must complete a mandatory assessment interview, used to judge physical stamina and the psychological readiness to work safely at elevated heights; a free orientation or information session is encouraged before applying. The page states no minimum grades, GPA, or English/French language test score, and does not mention a portfolio, criminal record check, or immunisation requirement. Intakes run in March and September.

Application Details

Start Date: March and September
Application Deadline: Domestic applicants apply directly to UFV: applications for Fall (September) 2027 entry open 1 October 2026, for Winter (January) 2027 entry opened 1 May 2026, and for Summer (May) 2027 entry open 1 October 2026; UFV publishes no closing date for any of these and instead admits many programmes strictly in application-date order once every required document has arrived, so applying soon after opening matters more than any deadline. Grade 12 students may apply from 1 October of their graduating year and must send final transcripts by 3 August. International applicants use UFV International's own windows - 1 October to 31 May for Fall, 1 May to 31 October for Winter and 1 October to 1 March for Summer - and are likewise assessed on a rolling, first-arrived basis until each programme fills. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
