International Development Studies (Co-op) is an Honours Bachelor of Science specialist program at the University of Toronto Scarborough. The program addresses international development issues such as poverty, inequality, humanitarian aid, conflict and migration, and environmental degradation, with the science stream incorporating coursework in biology, chemistry, environmental science, and ecology alongside development studies. The co-op stream includes an 8- to 12-month work term abroad, completed during the fourth year, providing applied international development experience alongside academic study. First-year courses include an introduction to international development studies, microeconomics, macroeconomics, and environmental science, plus additional biology and chemistry courses. Graduates commonly pursue careers such as development consultant, policy advisor, monitoring and evaluation specialist, and communications officer. The program is offered at the Scarborough campus, leading to an Honours Bachelor of Science degree.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Applicants require an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) with a minimum 70% in Grade 12 English (ENG4U); Advanced Functions (MHF4U) and Biology (SBI4U) are recommended, with Chemistry also recommended for the science stream. The current competitive admission average is in the low 80s overall. A Supplementary Application Form is required and an interview may follow.
