International Development Studies (Science) at the University of Toronto Scarborough is the Honours Bachelor of Science stream of the multidisciplinary International Development Studies program, housed in the Department of Global Development Studies. It examines how and why countries develop differently, combining biology, chemistry, environmental science and ecology with development theory to address issues such as poverty, inequality, humanitarian aid, conflict, migration and environmental degradation, while stressing the importance of context and power in development analysis. Advanced Functions and Biology at the Grade 12 level are needed to pursue this stream, with Chemistry recommended, though they are not required for general admission. Students may pursue the Specialist Program in International Development Studies (Science), which requires 13.5 credits and is open to all UTSC students; Major and Minor routes fall under the parallel Arts (HBA) stream. The program runs four years full-time, with Fall and Winter entry points, and develops analytical, writing and professional skills.
