Overview
Medieval Studies is offered by the Centre for Medieval Studies in the Faculty of Arts & Science at the University of Toronto's St. George campus, leading to an Honours Bachelor of Arts (HBA) with Major, Minor, or Specialist options. The program covers the thousand-year period from the fall of Rome to the fall of Constantinople and beyond, and is interdisciplinary by design: students cross the boundaries of history, art, literature, philosophy, religion, and the history of science, with a geographic focus extending beyond Europe to the broader Mediterranean and North Sea regions. It is intended to give students a humanities breadth experience, offering exposure to the culture, poetry, and art of the Middle Ages, as well as medieval music, drama performance, and manuscript studies. Coursework draws on faculty from multiple home departments who are cross-affiliated with the Centre for Medieval Studies.
