International Development Studies at the University of Toronto Scarborough is a multidisciplinary program examining how and why countries develop differently, drawing on geography, political science, anthropology, environmental science, economics and development studies. Housed in the Department of Global Development Studies, it builds a critical understanding of issues such as poverty, inequality, humanitarian aid, conflict, migration and environmental degradation, stressing the importance of context and power in development theory and practice. The Arts stream leads to an Honours Bachelor of Arts and incorporates economics, health studies, political science, geography and anthropology courses; a parallel Science stream leads to an Honours Bachelor of Science and adds biology, chemistry, environmental science and ecology coursework. Students may pursue a Specialist, Major or Minor, with a Co-operative option available under a separate admission category requiring 4.0 completed credits and a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5. The non-co-op program runs four years full-time, with Fall and Winter entry points, and develops analytical, writing and professional skills.
