Overview

Portuguese is offered by the Department of Italian, Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies in the Faculty of Arts & Science at the University of Toronto's St. George campus, leading to an Honours Bachelor of Arts (HBA) with Specialist (10.0 credits), Major (7.0 credits), or Minor (4.0 credits) options, alongside a separate Certificate in Portuguese Language (2.0 credits). Portuguese is spoken by over 260 million people and is the official language of countries in Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Americas. The program offers an integrated curriculum combining courses in language, linguistics, literature, film, and culture, and examines colonial histories, diverse cultural identities, social justice struggles, and environmental questions from a global perspective.
