The Bachelor of Arts in Applied Linguistics provides you with a balanced theoretical and practical education. Working closely with faculty, you receive a strong grounding in theories and issues of additional-language teaching and learning. The program also offers practical experience through a language teaching practicum, classroom observations, and further experiential opportunities.

Admission Requirements: The programme's own page has been retired (uvic.ca returns a 404 for it), so this summarises UVic's general Year-1 entrance basis for direct entry into the Faculty of Humanities, since the Linguistics department's own overview names no extra prerequisites for the regular BA major. Canadian secondary-school applicants graduate carrying the university's approved Grade 12 courses: BC and Yukon applicants need English Studies 12 or English First Peoples 12 at 73% or higher plus three further approved academic Grade 12 courses; Ontario applicants need English 4U at 73% or higher plus five further 4U/4M courses; every other province has its own equivalent list on UVic's admissions site. English-language proficiency, required of applicants whose prior education was not fully in English, is met with IELTS Academic 6.5 overall (no component below 6.0), TOEFL iBT 88 overall (no section below 20), CAEL 70 (no section below 60), Cambridge C1/C2 180 (no skill below 170), Duolingo 120 (no subscore below 110), or PTE Academic 65 (no skill below 60); a lower conditional-admission band also exists. Students declare the Linguistics or Applied Linguistics major after admission; only the separate honours stream adds its own bar, a 6.0 (B+) GPA in upper-level linguistics courses.
Application Details
Start Date:September (Winter Session) entry is the main intake and the only one open to applicants still in high school. UVic also lists January and Summer starts for this program, open to applicants who have already left high school and to post-secondary transfer applicants.
Application Deadline:UVic institution-wide dates, identical for Canadian and international applicants (UVic publishes no separate international deadline). September entry: 31 January. January entry: 30 September. Summer entry: 31 March. The January and Summer intakes are for high-school graduates and transfer applicants, not for students still in high school. High-school applicants who submit grades by early December can be considered for early admission. UVic states these are annual fixed dates and warns that a program can stop accepting applications at any time without notice, while some programs keep accepting them past the published date.
