UVic's Department of French and Francophone Studies offers this certificate to students who are not enrolled in the department's major, honours, or general and minor programs in French. It requires 10 units of study in total and is designed to build practical French-language proficiency together with cultural knowledge of the Francophone world. Because the certificate exists outside the department's own degree programs, it suits students who are majoring in another subject and want a structured, credit-bearing way to develop their French rather than committing to a full specialization in French and Francophone Studies. It can be added onto a student's existing degree program in any other discipline, giving that student a secondary, transcript-recognized credential in French, one of Canada's two official languages, alongside their primary qualification. The specific courses that make up the required 10 units are set by the department and detailed in the university's undergraduate calendar rather than on the general program page, so applicants should consult that listing for the current course list and any prerequisites before enrolling in the certificate.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: UVic's own academic calendar entry for this certificate states only that admission is governed by the Faculty of Humanities' general requirements, with no separate figures of its own. That Faculty requirement is UVic's general Year-1 entrance basis: BC and Yukon applicants need English Studies 12 or English First Peoples 12 at 73% or higher plus three further approved academic Grade 12 courses, Ontario applicants need English 4U at 73% or higher plus five further 4U/4M courses, and every other province has its own equivalent list on UVic's admissions site. English-language proficiency, required of applicants whose prior education was not fully in English, is met with IELTS Academic 6.5 overall (no component below 6.0), TOEFL iBT 88 overall (no section below 20), CAEL 70 (no section below 60), Cambridge C1/C2 180, Duolingo 120, or PTE Academic 65. On top of general admission, the certificate's own progression rule requires a B or higher in FRAN 275 (or equivalent French skill) before a student can take FRAN 375; a student who misses that grade can instead requalify with an A- in FRAN 345.
Application Details
Application Deadline:Domestic applicants apply through EducationPlannerBC, which opens for 2027-entry applications on 1 October 2026: most degree programmes see September 2027 entry close 31 January 2027, January 2027 entry close 30 September 2026, and Summer 2027 entry close 31 March 2027, though Teacher Education post-degree programmes close 2 January 2027, Indigenous Education post-degree admits on an ongoing basis, and Engineering's Summer entry (high-school graduates only) closes 31 December 2026. International applicants use the same portal and face identical dates, since UVic publishes no separate international deadline. UVic treats these as fixed annual dates rather than rolling admission, though it warns any programme can close early without notice. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
