Overview
UVic's MA in Applied Linguistics is a two-year, supervised research degree centred on second language acquisition in its full diversity, including the practice and methodologies of teaching second languages. Students take coursework in linguistic topics and research methods, then pursue an individual research project under a supervisor with expertise in their area, choosing either a thesis or a project route. Specialised study can reach across phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, sociolinguistics and Indigenous language revitalization, and considerable weight falls on research methodology: designing empirical studies, then analysing and interpreting the resulting data. Study is full-time and on-campus with an optional co-op component. A shorter, more focused one-year Diploma in Applied Linguistics is offered as an alternative for those not seeking the full master's.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: This University of Victoria master's program requires completion of a four-year bachelor's degree, or equivalent, preferably in linguistics, from a university recognized by UVic, with a minimum overall B+ average in the final year of that degree. Applicants whose first language is not English must meet an English-language threshold of TOEFL 600 on the paper-based test, 250 on the computer-based test or 100 on the internet-based test, or IELTS with a minimum score of 7 on every component. Required materials include a letter of intent of up to two pages, official transcripts, two letters of reference, a curriculum vitae, and a writing sample of up to five pages. The program admits for a September start, with an application deadline of February 1.
