Recreation and Leisure Studies is a Bachelor of Arts programme at the University of Waterloo, delivered by Canada's first department of recreation, with a history spanning 50 years. Students choose one of three majors when they apply: Recreation, Leadership, and Health; Sport and Recreation Management; or Therapeutic Recreation, each examining recreation's role in health and wellbeing. Teaching combines guest speakers, community outreach events, case studies and real-life projects for hands-on, applied learning. Ontario secondary school applicants apply through the Ontario Universities' Application Centre with six Grade 12 U or M courses, including a Grade 12 U English course with a minimum final grade of 70%; the competitive admission average for recent cycles has been in the low 80s for both co-op and regular routes. Graduates receive a Bachelor of Arts in their chosen major.
