Overview
Childhood and Youth Studies is a Bachelor of Arts offered by Carleton University's Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. The programme provides an interdisciplinary education on the experiences of children and youth, examining how social structures of power, privilege and oppression shape their identities, alongside topics such as children's rights and youth activism. Students study the wellbeing of young people in Canada and internationally and develop practical skills for community, institutional and government settings. A practicum placement option lets students apply programme knowledge in a community setting; Carleton describes it as the only programme of its kind in Eastern Ontario. Sample courses include an introduction to childhood and youth studies and a course on early childhood education and care. Graduates are prepared for roles in advocacy, child development, early childhood education, counselling, health and social services, policy development, research and teaching, across community-based organizations, government and non-government organizations, and childcare and education settings.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: The Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent including a minimum of six 4U or M courses. The six 4U or M courses must include a 4U course in English.
