Education: Bachelor's Degree (BEd) is a bachelor's degree in Education & Teaching programme offered by Vancouver Island University in Nanaimo, Canada. The programme runs for 5 years, delivered on campus. Teaching is in English. Tuition is CAD 5,100 per total for local students.
The program provides the fundamentals needed to become a teacher at the elementary or secondary level, covering a range of teaching strategies and professional development skills that build toward a BC teaching certificate. Coursework draws on Education alongside disciplines such as the arts, humanities, social sciences and human services, combined with field-work experience.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Year One entry: VIU's general admission requirements, a minimum "C" in English 12 or equivalent, a minimum "C" in either Pre-Calculus 11 or Foundations of Mathematics 11 — or, in place of that, a pass in the Grade 12 version of either course or an accepted equivalent — and completion of the CASPer test. Rankings are set 40% on the English and mathematics requirements and 60% on CASPer.
Year Three entry: the same general requirements, English and mathematics minimums and CASPer, plus a completed Applicant Profile and at least 48 post-secondary credits whose content is acceptable to three bodies: VIU's Faculty of Education, VIU Admissions and Registration, and the Teacher Regulation Branch of the BC Ministry of Education and Child Care. Rankings are set 60% on GPA and 40% on CASPer.
Dispersed Delivery entry: at least 66 post-secondary credits acceptable to the same three bodies, made up of 18 credits of elementary prerequisite coursework (6 credits of the Degree English Requirement, 6 of approved mathematics, 3 of approved science and 3 of approved Canadian studies), 15 credits of approved Teacher Regulation Branch electives, and 33 credits of any undergraduate electives or transfer courses excluding practicum-based ones. You also complete CASPer, an Applicant Profile, and two letters of support or recommendation from a direct supervisor or community leaders speaking to your suitability. Rankings are set 60% on the GPA of your 48 most recent credits and 40% on CASPer.
Indigenous applicants are encouraged to self-identify and apply under the Faculty of Education's Access Initiative, which sits inside the Applicant Profile.
Before any field experience or practicum you need a satisfactory criminal record check, which VIU processes through the BC Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General under the Criminal Records Review Act; an RCMP check does not satisfy the Act. The Faculty of Education may require further screening to the satisfaction of individual school districts. Anyone with a criminal conviction, or an absolute or conditional discharge, must consult the Teacher Regulation Branch and be judged eligible for certification before applying.
