Vancouver Island University offers Education Assistant and Community Support Certificate, a certificate in Education & Teaching programme in Nanaimo, Canada. The programme runs for 8 months, delivered on campus. Teaching is in English. Tuition is CAD 5,100 per total for local students.
The certificate combines theoretical study with practical application for working with people living with disabilities over their lifespan. Core and specialty courses build the skills needed to work in schools and community settings, and the eight-month program prepares graduates for roles in public and private schools as well as community and residential programs. It can be taken full-time or part-time and includes hands-on training with experienced instructors.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: VIU's general admission requirements apply, plus a minimum "C" in English 12 or equivalent, two letters of reference, and a resume with a covering letter. Volunteer or paid experience supporting people with a range of support needs is recommended but not required.
Flexible admission: in exceptional cases VIU will admit an applicant with lower formal qualifications where they hold substantial relevant experience. That route asks for a letter of intent explaining why you want to take the programme, a portfolio evidencing applicable prior learning, and an interview.
Criminal record screening is central to this programme. Applicants need a satisfactory criminal record check processed by the BC Criminal Records Review Program through the Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General under the Criminal Records Review Act; the check is requested through VIU at the point of application and you are responsible for completing every step within the time allowed. A Criminal Record Clearance Letter issued by that ministry must be in hand before the programme starts — an RCMP check does not satisfy the requirement, and neither does a clearance letter issued before the programme began. Because the programme places students with children and vulnerable adults, the Faculty of Education may require further screening to the satisfaction of individual practicum placements.
Delivery note that affects planning: the programme can be taken full time or part time, with classes mostly in the evening, delivered synchronously online with some in-person seminars.
Application Details
Start Date:September
Application Deadline:Domestic (Canadian) applicants apply through EducationPlannerBC; Vancouver Island University sets no institution-wide equal-consideration date, and its admissions FAQ states deadlines vary by programme, with applications for most academic programmes opening 1 October in the year before a September start. VIU publishes no general closing date for that window; applicants are directed to each programme's own page for its own deadline. International applicants use the same portal; VIU publishes no international-specific institution-wide date either, and several health programmes (Practical Nursing, Nursing Unit Assistant) are stated as not currently open to international students. Each programme's own page carries its own Start Date, Deadlines, and Additional Application Details table for the 2026-27 cycle, and admission for programmes without a stated window is treated as ongoing/rolling until the intake fills. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
