Education: Post-Baccalaureate Bachelor's Degree (BEd)

Admission Requirements: This is a post-degree teacher education programme with separate elementary and secondary options; each needs its own VIU application, and applicants to both state a preference inside the Applicant Profile. Elementary teaching option: a degree from a recognised university or university-college whose content is acceptable to three bodies — VIU's Faculty of Education, VIU Admissions and Registration, and the Teacher Regulation Branch of the BC Ministry of Education and Child Care; a minimum GPA of 2.33 ("C+") on the 60 most recent credits attempted; 6 credits (or equivalent) of approved undergraduate composition and literature; 3 credits of approved undergraduate science; 3 credits of approved undergraduate mathematics; and 3 credits of approved undergraduate Canadian studies. VIU publishes a Summary of Elementary Teaching (Kindergarten to Grade 7) Prerequisites. Secondary teaching option: the same kind of accepted degree and the same 2.33 ("C+") minimum on the 60 most recent credits attempted, plus 6 credits or equivalent of approved undergraduate composition and literature. Trades teaching applicants may instead present a Red Seal that those same three bodies accept in content. VIU publishes a Summary of Secondary Teaching (Grades 8 to 12) Prerequisites. Both options require official transcripts (including interim coursework) from every post-secondary institution attended other than VIU — photocopies and faxes are not accepted — plus the CASPer test and a completed Applicant Profile. The Applicant Profile is filled in through the VIU Student Record, documents how you have met Teacher Regulation Branch certification requirements, identifies your teachable areas, and can be revised up to the deadline. Admission rankings are 60% GPA and 40% CASPer. Indigenous applicants are encouraged to self-identify and apply under the Faculty of Education's Access Initiative within the Applicant Profile. Enrolment is limited, so meeting the minimums does not guarantee a seat. VIU expects competence in oral and written communication, interpersonal skills, computation and computer applications. Before field experience or practicum you need a satisfactory criminal record check processed through the BC Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General under the Criminal Records Review Act; an RCMP check does not satisfy it, and further screening may be required to satisfy individual school districts. Anyone with a criminal conviction, or an absolute or conditional discharge, must consult the Teacher Regulation Branch and be judged eligible for certification before applying.
