Overview

This certificate builds skills aimed at helping adults facing barriers like cognitive or developmental disabilities find meaningful work. Students develop personal, interpersonal and employment-related skills intended to leave them confident and ready to enter the workforce. It is a non-credit program built around six practicums spread across two years.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Applicants must be high-school graduates (or hold a completion certificate) or be at least 17 years old and out of school for a minimum of one year, and must have a diagnosed or documented history of a learning difficulty or disability. Applicants must be able to attend classroom and practicum sessions independently and demonstrate the strength and endurance the program's tasks require. A criminal record check may be required for some modules, and an interview is required to confirm suitability for entry. VIU does not publish an English-language test requirement for this program. Intake runs on an ongoing basis at both the Nanaimo campus (September 7, 2027 start) and the Cowichan campus, where the program runs every two years (2025, 2027; next start September 13, 2027).
