Program details

Overview

The Carpentry Certificate is a foundation-level program equivalent to Level 1 of a Carpentry apprenticeship, preparing students for entry into the residential, commercial, and industrial construction trades. Delivered full-time over eight months, the program is distinctive for dedicating roughly half of instructional time to live job-site training, where students help build an actual house in the community alongside classroom theory and shop-based skill practice. The program is offered at VIU's Nanaimo campus with Fall and Spring intakes, at the Cowichan campus with a Spring intake aimed largely at dual-credit high school students, and at the Powell River (tiwšɛmawtxʷ) campus with a Fall intake. Students complete a structured two-week work-experience placement with a local employer near the end of the program, which frequently leads directly to employment offers. Admission requires a minimum age of 17, Grade 12 or equivalent, physical fitness, and completion of program assessment testing. Graduates can continue into apprenticeship training toward Red Seal endorsement, and the program suits people who want a hands-on trades career with flexibility and stronger earning potential than general construction labour.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Admission requires Grade 12 or equivalent, or mature-student status, with a minimum age of 17, plus successful completion of VIU's assessment testing and a personal profile; an interview may also be required. Applicants must be physically fit and able to adapt to working conditions, have good hand-eye coordination, be free of vision, hearing, or respiratory problems, and hold a valid driver's licence if operating vehicles or equipment. Non-dual-credit applicants at the Cowichan campus need a satisfactory Criminal Record Check. Enrolment is limited, so meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee a seat. No English-language test score or minimum GPA is published for this certificate.
