Vancouver Island University offers Trades - Apprenticeship in Welder B: Modular Training, a trades - apprenticeship in Trades programme in Nanaimo, Canada. The programme runs for 16 weeks, delivered on campus. Teaching is in English. Tuition is CAD 118 per total for local students.
Welder B: Modular Training is a 16-week technical training program at VIU's Nanaimo campus that builds on the skills developed in the Welder Foundation program, Welding Levels 1 and 2 Apprenticeship, or equivalent Level C certification. The program develops more advanced welding processes, including shielded metal arc welding, gas tungsten arc welding, and semi-automatic and automatic welding techniques, alongside metallurgy, blueprint reading, and quality-control standards. Technical training is paired with an additional eight months of required work experience, after which graduates can obtain Provincial Ministry Level B certification. The program is intended for registered apprentices who have already completed the prerequisite foundation or Level 1/2 training and are seeking a broader base of welding skills and expanded employment opportunities, rather than students seeking their first exposure to the trade.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: This is an apprenticeship-level continuation, not an entry-level programme: applicants must already hold Welding Foundation or Welding Level 1 and 2 Apprenticeship standing (or Level C), be registered as an apprentice with SkilledTradesBC, and have an employer sponsor, applying through Education Planner BC under Apprenticeship Training (Registered Apprentices Only). Provincial Ministry Level B certification additionally requires roughly four months of technical training plus eight months of documented work experience as a welder. Seats fill on a first-come, first-registered basis and a waitlist may apply. No academic course, grade, GPA, or English-language test score is published for this apprenticeship level.
Application Details
Application Deadline:Domestic (Canadian) applicants apply through EducationPlannerBC; Vancouver Island University sets no institution-wide equal-consideration date, and its admissions FAQ states deadlines vary by programme, with applications for most academic programmes opening 1 October in the year before a September start. VIU publishes no general closing date for that window; applicants are directed to each programme's own page for its own deadline. International applicants use the same portal; VIU publishes no international-specific institution-wide date either, and several health programmes (Practical Nursing, Nursing Unit Assistant) are stated as not currently open to international students. Each programme's own page carries its own Start Date, Deadlines, and Additional Application Details table for the 2026-27 cycle, and admission for programmes without a stated window is treated as ongoing/rolling until the intake fills. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
