BA/BS in Black Studies

Black Studies is an undergraduate major at Western University that develops students' knowledge of the issues facing people of the Black diaspora through historical, theoretical, and sociocultural study. The module totals 6.0 courses and is built around two required courses, Black Studies 2230F/G and Black Studies 3420F/G, together with a structured set of electives at the 2000-, 3000- and 4000-level drawn from Black Studies, Anthropology, Gender, Sexuality, and Women's Studies, History, Political Science, English, Media, Information and Technoculture, Philosophy, and Sociology. Coursework examines topics such as diaspora, race, culture, and social and political movements connected to Black communities. The programme leads to a Bachelor's degree with a Major in Black Studies and prepares graduates for further study or careers in fields such as education, public policy, community work, and the humanities and social sciences. Entry requires completion of first-year requirements with an average of at least 60% in 3.0 courses, including a required introductory course.
