The MA in Classics at Western University is an interdisciplinary program in which students research the cultures of ancient Greece and Rome, spanning language and literature, political, military and social history, and the archaeological record. Each year the department offers a balanced mix of seminars in Greek poetry and prose, Latin poetry and prose, and ancient history or archaeology, built around analysis and interpretation of literary or archaeological source material. Assessment combines class participation, presentations, research papers and examinations. The program is completed over five terms of full-time study, with thesis-based or course-based options, and aims to develop students into sophisticated readers of ancient evidence with strong critical-thinking and communication skills.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Applicants need an honours-level degree in Classics or Classical Studies with at least a high B average in the undergraduate degree, plus at least three years of either Greek or Latin and two years of the other language at the undergraduate level. Students with a strong academic record who lack the required language levels may still be admitted but must take appropriate Greek or Latin courses alongside their graduate coursework. Applicants whose first language is not English must meet Western's proficiency requirement, for example a minimum IELTS Academic score of 6 out of 9, or the equivalent TOEFL iBT score.
