Program details

Overview

This is a graduate program in Western University's Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, offering a research-based Master of Engineering Science (M.E.Sc.) alongside doctoral study for students who continue on to a Ph.D. Coursework and research are organized around four specialization areas: communications, power, robotics, and software. The department describes its work as research-focused, with faculty active in current technology areas and students given access to dedicated labs and facilities tied to each specialization area. Teaching and research activity are based in the Thompson Engineering Building on Western's main campus in London, Ontario. The program suits students with an electrical or computer engineering background who want to pursue focused graduate research in one of the four listed specialization areas, particularly those interested in continuing toward doctoral study within the same department.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Western's Electrical and Computer Engineering graduate programs set different academic floors by stream: the course-based Master of Engineering (MEng) requires a minimum 70% average over the last two years of a four-year honours degree or equivalent, while the thesis-based Master of Engineering Science (MESc) requires a minimum 78% average over the same period; PhD applicants need at least 78% in their master's degree. Applicants whose first language is not English must meet the department's own scale: IELTS overall 6.5 with no individual band below 6, TOEFL iBT overall 4.5 on the new scale, MELAB with at least 80 on each section and 85 overall, CAEL 60, or Duolingo 115. No GRE is required for the MEng or MESc.

Application Details

Application Deadline: Western applies through the Ontario Universities' Application Centre, which opens for Fall 2027 entry in late September 2026; Western's own equal-consideration deadline for full-time undergraduate study is 15 January 2027, the same date used for domestic (OUAC 101/105) and international applicants alike, since Western publishes no separate international closing date. Several named programmes carry their own earlier deadlines within the cycle: Medicine (MD) closes 1 October 2026, Law (JD) and Dentistry (DDS) close 1 November 2026, Education (BEd) closes 2 November 2026, and Western Integrated Science closes in early April 2027. Students already enrolled in an Ontario high school cannot be required to respond to an offer before 1 June 2027. Admission is not rolling: applicants are assessed against these published deadlines. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
