Visual Arts (MFA) is offered by the Department of Visual Arts in Western University's Faculty of Arts and Humanities. The MFA in Visual Art offers training in contemporary visual art and prepares graduates for professional careers as artists and curators, for advanced studies at the PhD level, and for careers in galleries, museums, and other art-world contexts. It combines an emphasis on critical theory with studio-based instruction; in the first semester, all MA and MFA students take a shared core course in art methodologies, after which MFA students work in small seminar courses to develop their research and studio practice. The program is full-time and thesis-based, completed over six terms. Applicants typically hold a BFA or Honours BA in visual arts and are expected to demonstrate significant creative and academic accomplishment through a written and studio portfolio.
